Show picture of a cat. Ask: 'What animal is this? Let's sound it out: /c/ /a/ /t/ ... cat!'

  • Introduce CVC pattern: Consonant-Vowel-Consonant

  • Demonstrate with 'cat':

    • C = /c/ (consonant)
    • A = /a/ (vowel - short a sound)
    • T = /t/ (consonant)
  • Blend sounds: /c/ - /a/ - /t/ = cat

  • Show more examples with pictures:

    • dog: /d/ /o/ /g/
    • sun: /s/ /u/ /n/
    • bed: /b/ /e/ /d/
    • sit: /s/ /i/ /t/
  • Write CVC words on the board and sound them out together
